Description
Description
Thai Flying Fox, scientifically known as Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus, is a freshwater fish species belonging to the Cyprinidae family. It is commonly found in Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Here are some details about this fish:
1. Temperature: The Thai Flying Fox prefers a tropical temperature range of 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C).
2. Minimum Tank Size: A tank with a minimum capacity of 30 gallons is recommended to provide enough space for these active fish.
Feeding Habits: The Thai Flying Fox is omnivorous. In the wild, it feeds on algae, small invertebrates, and plant matter. In captivity, they will accept a varied diet that includes high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp. Offering a mix of vegetable-based and protein-rich foods is ideal.
Habitat Preference: Found in clear, flowing waters with rocky substrates and plenty of vegetation. In an aquarium, they appreciate a setup with rocks, driftwood, and live plants, providing hiding spots and areas to explore.
Water pH Level: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.
Behavior: The Thai Flying Fox is an active and social fish. It tends to be peaceful but can show territorial behavior, especially towards its own kind or similar-looking species.
They are known to be social and tend to do better when kept in groups of three or more. However, be cautious about keeping them in large groups in smaller tanks, as territorial disputes may arise.
The Thai Flying Fox is not strictly nocturnal. It is diurnal, meaning it is active during the day. It tends to swim in the middle and bottom levels of the aquarium.
Color and Other Details: The body of the Thai Flying Fox is elongated and torpedo-shaped. It has a distinctive black band that runs horizontally from the eyes to the caudal fin, which gives it a "flying fox" appearance. The body coloration is typically silver or gold. The fins may have red or orange hues.
It's crucial to keep in mind that the name "Thai Flying Fox" is sometimes used interchangeably with the Siamese Algae Eater (Crossocheilus siamensis). Both species have similarities, and there can be confusion in identifying them. It's essential to verify the species when purchasing to ensure proper care.
