Description

Gardneri Killifish (F. gardneri nigerianum), is a vibrant and hardy freshwater species popular among aquarists for its stunning coloration and relatively easy care. 


Origin & Natural Habitat

  • Native to Nigeria and Cameroon, typically found in shallow, slow-moving waters like streams, marshes, and ponds.
  • Often inhabits tannin-stained waters with dense vegetation 

Appearance

  • Males: Bright metallic blue-green bodies with red spots and lyre-shaped tails.
  • Females: More subdued, golden-gray with fewer markings.
  • Size: Up to 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) 

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 65–75°F (18–24°C)
  • pH: 6.0–7.5
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water
  • Tank Size: Minimum 10 gallons 

Tank Setup

  • Substrate: Dark sand or fine gravel
  • Plants: Dense planting with floating plants for shade
  • Decor: Driftwood, rocks, and leaf litter for hiding spots
  • Filtration: Gentle flow; sponge filters are ideal
  • Lid: Essential—they are jumpers!

Diet

  • Carnivorous: Prefers live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia
  • Will accept high-quality flakes or micro-pellets
  • Feed small portions 2–3 times daily 

Behavior & Compatibility
  • Generally peaceful but males can be territorial
  • Best kept in pairs or trios (1 male:2 females)
  • Avoid housing with long-finned or brightly colored fish
  • Good tankmates: Tetras, Corydoras, Rasboras, Danios 

Breeding

  • Egg layers: Prefer spawning mops or dense plants
  • Eggs hatch in 2–3 weeks; fry need infusoria or baby brine shrimp
  • Can be bred in separate breeding tanks to protect eggs from being eaten
