Platinum Lyretail Molly (Poecilia sphenops)

Description

The Platinum Lyretail Molly (Poecilia sphenops) is a popular freshwater aquarium fish known for its striking appearance and peaceful nature.

  1. Temperature: Keep the water temperature in the range of 75-82°F (24-28°C). Maintaining a stable temperature is essential for the well-being of Platinum Lyretail Mollies.

  2. Minimum Tank Size: A tank with a minimum capacity of 20 gallons is recommended for a small group of Platinum Lyretail Mollies. Larger tanks are preferable for larger groups or if other fish species are present.

Feeding Habits: Platinum Lyretail Mollies are omnivores and accept a variety of foods. Provide a balanced diet that includes high-quality flake or pellet food, as well as occasional live or frozen treats like brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms.

Habitat Preference: These Mollies thrive in well-planted aquariums with plenty of hiding spots. They appreciate the presence of floating plants, which can provide cover for fry and reduce stress.

Water pH Level: Maintain a slightly alkaline to neutral pH level in the range of 7.0-8.0.

Behavior: Platinum Lyretail Mollies are generally peaceful and social. They should be kept in groups of at least three to prevent stress and promote their natural shoaling behavior.

Mollies are known to be social and tend to form loose schools, especially when kept in larger groups. Having multiple Mollies in the tank helps in reducing stress and enhances their overall well-being.

They swim in various levels of the tank and are often found near the middle to upper regions.

Color: As the name suggests, Platinum Lyretail Mollies have a distinct platinum or silver coloration with a lyre-shaped tail. The males are more colorful and exhibit a vibrant appearance.

Other Details: Mollies, in general, are known for their adaptability to various water conditions. However, they are sensitive to poor water quality, so regular water changes and proper filtration are crucial. It's also worth noting that Mollies are livebearers, meaning they give birth to live fry instead of laying eggs.

Ensure that the tank is properly cycled before introducing Platinum Lyretail Mollies, and monitor water parameters regularly to ensure optimal conditions for their health and well-being.
