Mopani / Coral Drift Wood

Description

Mopani /Coral Wood is a highly sought-after natural hardscape material, especially popular in aquariums, terrariums, and vivariums. Here's a detailed look at what makes it special and how to use it:

 What Is Mopani Wood?
  • Origin: Comes from the roots of the Mopane tree (Colophospermum mopane), native to southern Africa.
  • Appearance: Known for its two-tone coloration—a rich dark brown swirled with lighter tan sections. Each piece is unique, often with gnarled, twisted shapes.
  • Texture: Dense and heavy, with a smooth finish once cleaned.

Why Use Mopani Wood?

  1. Aquarium Benefits:

    • Releases tannins, which can lower pH and have antimicrobial properties
    • Provides natural hiding spots for fish and shrimp.
    • Adds a realistic, earthy aesthetic to aquascapes.
  2. Terrarium/Vivarium Use:

    • Durable in humid environments.
    • Excellent for climbing reptiles or as a decorative focal point.
    • Doesn’t rot easily, making it long-lasting

How to Prepare Mopani Wood for Use

Before placing it in an aquarium or terrarium, follow these steps

  1. Rinse Thoroughly: Remove dirt and debris.
  2. Soak for Several Days: Change water daily to reduce tannin release.
  3. Boil (Optional): Boil for 1–2 hours to sterilize and help it sink.
  4. Cure: Let it sit in clean water until it no longer heavily discolors the water.
