Description

Glyptothorax platypogon is a small species of catfish belonging to the family Sisoridae, commonly found in fast-flowing freshwater streams in Indonesia, particularly in Java.

Key Characteristics:

  • Family: Sisoridae (sisorid catfishes)
  • Order: Siluriformes
  • Size: Up to 10 cm total length
  • Habitat: Prefers benthopelagic zones in tropical streams with gravel and rocky substrates
  • Temperature Range: 18–22°C
  • pH Range: 6.0–7.0

Distinctive Features:

  • Adhesive Apparatus: Located on the thorax, helps the fish cling to rocks in fast currents
  • Body Shape: Elongated with an oval cross-section
  • Coloration: Typically lacks prominent dark longitudinal stripes on the caudal fin
  • Mouth: Premaxillary toothband is half-exposed when closed
  • Fins: Dorsal fin has a concave margin; pectoral-fin spine is relatively short
