Description
Description
Serpenticobitis octozona, commonly known as the Serpent Loach, is a fascinating freshwater fish native to the Xe Kong watershed of the lower Mekong basin in Laos.
- Size: It can grow up to 6.5 cm (2.6 inches) in length
- Habitat: Prefers clear, high-gradient waters with swift currents, often found in rocky riverbeds surrounded by gallery forests
- Water Parameters: Requires soft, slightly acidic water with a pH of 6.0-7.0 and a temperature range of 23-26°C
- Diet: Feeds on small meaty frozen foods like mosquito larvae, daphnia, and vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, as well as small sinking pellets and granules
- Behavior: Highly sociable and inquisitive, best kept in groups of six or more. They are known for their ability to cling to surfaces even in strong currents
These loaches are quite active and require a well-filtered aquarium with high oxygen levels and plenty of rocky crevices to mimic their natural habitat. They are a unique and rewarding species for enthusiasts of Asian riverine fish.
