Description

Gold Medaka Ricefish (Oryzias latipes), is an extraordinarily adaptable species. These small freshwater fish are extremely popular in Asia and are relatively rare in North America and Europe. 

  • Appearance: Gold Medaka Ricefish exhibit vibrant yellow, orange, and red-orange hues. They grow to a size of about 1.2-1.6" and have a torpedo shaped body with blue or silvery eyes. 
  • Hardiness: These fish are hardy and can tolerate a wide range of water parameters, making them suitable for beginners.
  • Behavior: Medaka Ricefish are peaceful and can be kept in community aquariums.
  • Habitat: They were once an integral part of everyday life in Japan during the Edo period.
  • Etymology: The genus name Oryzias comes from the Latin word for “rice,” reflecting their association with rice paddies. T

 They thrive in freshwater or brackish water environments and prefer temperatures between 64 and 82 °F (18 to 28 °C). A 15-gallon tank is sufficient for them, and they have a lifespan of up to 4 years.
