Description

Marigold Variatus Platy (Xiphophorus variatus) is a vibrant and hardy livebearer fish, ideal for community aquariums. 


Marigold Variatus Platy Overview

  • Size: Typically 5–6 cm (2–2.5 inches).
  • Coloration: Bright golden-yellow to orange body with red or black accents, often with a shimmering or marbled appearance.
  • Fins: May have translucent or colored fins, sometimes with black edging or spots.
  • Sexual Dimorphism: Males are smaller and have a gonopodium (modified anal fin); females are larger and rounder.

Habitat & Origin

  • Native to eastern Mexico, particularly in slow-moving streams and canals.
  • The Variatus species is more tolerant of cooler temperatures than other platies.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: Minimum 15–20 gallons for a small group.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 18–26°C (64–79°F)
    • pH: 7.0–8.2
    • Hard water preferred
  • Diet: Omnivorous – flakes, pellets, algae, and live/frozen foods like brine shrimp or daphnia.
  • Behavior: Peaceful and social; best kept in groups. Great for community tanks.

Breeding

  • Livebearers: give birth to free-swimming fry.
  • Very prolific; provide plants or hiding spots for fry survival.
  • Can hybridize with other Xiphophorus species like swordtails and other platies.
