  • Distinctive Features:
    • 16-17 pectoral rays
    • 4-8 scales in transverse backward series
    • 35-49 lateral scales
    • First dorsal fin with 5-6 flexible spines
    • Urogenital papilla retractable into a sheath-like groove
    • Female characterized by 30-34 tricuspid teeth in the upper jaw
    • Male body colour is generally entirely greyish to silver with a slight reddish upper lip
